What Dreams May Come.

When it had begun we acted as if it were a game.
Stay out of sight.
Be an apparition.

Soon…
They found us.
Some ran.
Others hid.

Most were taken.

Myself and a few others managed to remain unseen.
Until the next night.
We were captured and marched off to a giant compound.

They were Chinese.
None of them spoke a word.
Not even to each other.
We were in our own country.
But they were here.

We were taken into a large chamber room.
Like something out of a post apocalyptic film.

When I walked in I saw some of the others that were with us.
Just the day before.
People were stacked one on top of the other.
Like loaves of bread on the supermarket shelf.
Some were crying.
Others were dazed.
Those who were with me piled in.
As if they knew the routine.
They began to stack themselves amongst the others.

One by one.

I made my way into the middle.
The entire time I kept thinking of a way out.

I’m getting us all out of here.
I said aloud.

I made eye contact with a girl of about 25 years of age.
There was something very familiar in her eyes.
Her hair was cut short, like a child’s.
Not shaven, yet very short and choppy.

I looked around the room.
All the women had their hair cut short.

The lights seemed to fade on and off.
In rhythm with a distant humming sound.

I slid my way in next to the girl.
I kept looking at her face.
I kept looking into her eyes.
They were very calming to me.
Large blue eyes taking me in.

A younger kid to my right…
That I remembered from the day before.
Was frantically asking me if i knew him.
If i knew what his name was.
When the last time i saw him was.

I said.
Yes, I know you.
I saw you yesterday.

I couldn’t tell if he had been drugged.
Or if it was sheer fright that had a hold of him.

Seconds after speaking to him.
He laid back.
His eyes left mine.
And he was gone.

Just like that.

I checked for a pulse.
Nothing.

Again, I said aloud.
I’m going to get us all out of here.

I looked to the front of the compound, near the door we came in.
Some stood with arms raised and hands held high.
Swaying back and forth.
As if they heard music.

Suddenly, I heard a loud crack.
The lights went out.

I awoke to the sound of birds singing.
And sunlight pouring in through my window.

ELLIPSE.

Tonight’s Departure.

Tonight I walked to the Belcourt, unassuming.

I purchased one ticket for ‘Departures’ at the outside window and connected with Jeff and Annie who were waiting inside. I was a few minutes late as I needed to grab a late night cup of coffee across the street. We entered the center screening room and took our creaky, yet inviting, seats.

I love to be surprised. More so by good news than bad.

Speaking along the lines of viewing a film – the unknown can be the most fulfilling experience. In this particular case I allowed myself to only view the name of the director and the poster art.

The rest I left up to chance.

The poster portrayed a man, seated, embracing a cello placed in a meadow with a vast display of mountains flanking him. That alone is what drew me to see this film. There is something so moving, so hypnotizing, about the sound of a lone cello placidly releasing each note.

I could soak it in for eternity.

The film began and my mind quickly adjusted to the ebb and flow of simultaneously reading the translation at the bottom and taking in the images that paralleled. As most Asian films the attention to detail in every aspect was absolutely stunning. The story unfolded with such a delicate touch that there are no other words for it.

I do not write tonight to give you a review of the movie from the perspective of a film critic, yet to simply express its impact upon me, and close.

Fully understanding that all of us are individually wired down to each single DNA, on each individual strand, when speaking upon death and loved ones – ALL are affected. Some, like myself, are stitched with microscopic pours full of sensitivity, and if that is you – beware.

[Measured by 'the Enneagram' this would be a type 4.]

It matters not the culture from where you derive, the level of income bestowed upon your household nor the shining-white-perfect-teethed smiling family portraits that you take pride in – no one comes from a “flawless upbringing”.  Be it masked or not, we are all human.

To err is human.

This film portrays such err. If you so happen to be one of us who were raised on the opposite end of perfection, the story line fused with meticulously beautiful acting will absolutely rip your heart open. No matter how cold.

This moment patiently awaits until the final scenes unfolding last breath. At that moment the softening of my heart,  that had been taking place throughout the past two hours, left me literally paralyzed.

Never too muscle-headed to ashamedly deny – I was moved to tears, several times throughout. More so then I have been in a long time. When you feel tinges of your reality in a culture so other worldly than your own, it’s quite moving.

I do hope that you will experience this film at some point and let it affect you, not entertain you. I think the later would be doing it such a grave disservice.

I have been so transported by this film, so deeply touched, that I know it’s time to write a few hard letters to those I love. Furthermore, back to the DNA wiring, I know that I will not be able to do so until this is done.

It’s never too late to express your true feelings… until it’s too late.

One Sentence at a Time.

I worked far too hard today.

I asked myself many questions regarding passion vs. money.

Passion won.

…so did the cost of living comfortably.

I decided at the end of the evening to venture out of the house and hit the theatre for a film.

The Time Travelers Wife.

Foremost, Rachel McAdams is enchanting.

…and very believable.

I want to be loved as such.

Second, albeit Science Fiction, I was moved.

Drip.

It brought a flood of thoughts that needed sorting.

It reminded me of a time I loved so much it nearly killed me.

I asked myself, if I knew it would end the way it did, would I have still loved just as much?

Yes.

Just as much.

I made my way back home.

As I pulled up the drive the moonlight poured in through the sunroof.

Peggy Lee was singing “Days of Wine and Roses”.

I shut down the engine and let her finish.

Moving.

I thought, “This song would be lovely on vinyl.”

I unlocked the door and headed upstairs for a bottle of water.

Back down I went and out into the street.

I focused on my breathing to obtain relaxation and a clear head for thinking.

I walked.

Thought.

Wrote things down on the walls of my mind.

I sang the verse to a song I wrote, last night, over and over.

Outloud.

I pondered how one, brief, encounter could spark such a thing.

I wandered onto the University that shares the main road with my new home.

Soon after, I found myself on the baseball field by way of an unlocked gate.

Standing at home plate, with nothing but the moon to light the field, I began to daydream.

I took a few practice swings.

Then, accepted a pitch from the mound in front of me and smacked it out of the park.

I ran the bases as if the game depended upon it.

When I returned to home plate, out of breath, I chuckled at myself.

I loved the game.

Teamwork.

Being accepted.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t molded to partake.

I stood there looking up at the lights – memories flashed back.

I remember trying out for the team every year in high school.

I shook my head and laughed as I also remembered being cut from the team.

Every year.

Just before the season would begin.

I pulled out the drawer labelled “Pieces of life that make me who I am” and placed these memories back inside.

I left the ball field and headed out past the soccer field… the tennis court… the gymnasium…

Walking down Granny White Pike, I arrived at one of my favourite bookstores.

Looking in the windows I smiled thinking how great it was that I could walk here.

The littlest things have always made me happy.

I made my way back through the campus stopping to read a few placards detailing moments of history.

I smiled again as I thought of how much my love for history has grown.

I stumbled upon a perfect little white swinging bench and made it my own for the next 30 minutes.

Aside from the crawlers of the night I seemed to be the only living organism out that evening.

Yet as time passed, a couple walked by arguing distinctively about their relationship.

He seemed miserable.

She, adamant.

I looked at the empty seat to my left and mentally shrugged my shoulders.

Shortly after, an older gentleman flew by on his bicycle.

Making a few rounds up and down ramps he too seemed to be reliving his youth.

I was alone again.

Crickets sang and the damp air grew thicker.

Naturally, my thoughts turned back to love.

I was looking at a tree in front of me thinking that it seemed perfect for carving initials enclosed by a heart.

I was brought back to when I was in Central Park this past May having those same thoughts.

Different tree.

Different interests.

Knowing that this life was not mine to script I stood and began to make my way back home.

Here I sit.

It’s empty.

Quiet.

But for now…

I am content.
