When it had begun we acted as if it were a game.
Stay out of sight.
Be an apparition.
Soon…
They found us.
Some ran.
Others hid.
Most were taken.
Myself and a few others managed to remain unseen.
Until the next night.
We were captured and marched off to a giant compound.
They were Chinese.
None of them spoke a word.
Not even to each other.
We were in our own country.
But they were here.
We were taken into a large chamber room.
Like something out of a post apocalyptic film.
When I walked in I saw some of the others that were with us.
Just the day before.
People were stacked one on top of the other.
Like loaves of bread on the supermarket shelf.
Some were crying.
Others were dazed.
Those who were with me piled in.
As if they knew the routine.
They began to stack themselves amongst the others.
One by one.
I made my way into the middle.
The entire time I kept thinking of a way out.
I’m getting us all out of here.
I said aloud.
I made eye contact with a girl of about 25 years of age.
There was something very familiar in her eyes.
Her hair was cut short, like a child’s.
Not shaven, yet very short and choppy.
I looked around the room.
All the women had their hair cut short.
The lights seemed to fade on and off.
In rhythm with a distant humming sound.
I slid my way in next to the girl.
I kept looking at her face.
I kept looking into her eyes.
They were very calming to me.
Large blue eyes taking me in.
A younger kid to my right…
That I remembered from the day before.
Was frantically asking me if i knew him.
If i knew what his name was.
When the last time i saw him was.
I said.
Yes, I know you.
I saw you yesterday.
I couldn’t tell if he had been drugged.
Or if it was sheer fright that had a hold of him.
Seconds after speaking to him.
He laid back.
His eyes left mine.
And he was gone.
Just like that.
I checked for a pulse.
Nothing.
Again, I said aloud.
I’m going to get us all out of here.
I looked to the front of the compound, near the door we came in.
Some stood with arms raised and hands held high.
Swaying back and forth.
As if they heard music.
Suddenly, I heard a loud crack.
The lights went out.
I awoke to the sound of birds singing.
And sunlight pouring in through my window.
